I took a pause before this book to start the Cosmere read. For obvious reasons, I did not go back until I was done with Cosmere. But, not I am back! And it's as bad as it ever was. The story is great. Kellus is awesome. It's so dark and nasty I love it. But, there so many things wrong. Not every character can have a double masters degree in philosophy Mr. Bakker! Every character is nearly the same when you pay attention to how they speak. They are all brooding philosophers. The book barely makes headway towards the main plot line. It has spend 25% of the book just talking about how "damned" the soldiers are. They became animalistic and, basically evil for awhile there. But you don't need to spend half the book talking about it. Are you trying to foreshadow something? Everyone has sex with everyone else, and everyTHING else. Bakker focuses so much attention on male sex that it's disturbing. All of these things were issues in the first series(Prince of Nothing). But they are just magnified here. The plot, the action, and the character revelations is what drove PoN. Now there are no more revelations. If there are, they are hidden behind purple prose and thick philosophy. The plot is crawling, if moving at all. And there hasn't really been any sort of fight or action yet. I will finish it, I can't have read this far to stop. But, needless to say I am skimming a lot.
